The UC San Diego Division of Physical Sciences (@UCSDPhySci) sponsored an exhibit at Future Tech Live! Check out a portable planetarium was part of Comic-Con’s technology showcase. Inflated like a bounce house, this dome showcased a variety of space-themed high-quality projections.


Conservation + Comics: Enhancing the Understanding of Science through Art

Saturday July 20, 2019 1:00 - 2:00 pm, Shiley Special Events Suite, San Diego Central Library

Marine biology graduate student Garfield Kwan discussed how Squidtoons (@SquidtoonsComic) and other art projects increase engagement with the sciences. Kwan was joined by other panelists, including National Park Service representatives, who are helping to add art into STEM education.

Time Travel in the Quantum Realm

Wondering whether time travel could ever be more than just science fiction? The Fleet Science Center hosted this conversation with writer and co-producer of Avengers: Endgame Christopher Markus and UC San Diego physics professors Elizabeth Simmons, Eric Michelsen and Kim Griest.

The Year in Space and Beyond

Physics Professor Brian Keating, CASS researcher Andrew Friedman and Professor Shelley Wright chatted about the discoveries that made news this year. Everyone saw the first photo of a black hole, but so much else happened in the realm of cosmology. Stuart Volkow of the Ax Center for Experimental Cosmology (@ucsdcosmology) moderated. 


San Diego 2049: World Building the Future at UC San Diego

Shelley Streeby, professor and author of Imagining the Future of Climate Change: World-Making through Science Fiction and Activism and science fiction writer/journalist Annalee Newitz was joined by two teams of UC San Diego graduate students who used science fiction world-building techniques to imagine the future of the San Diego border region (and the world beyond). Patrick Coleman of the Arthur C. Clarke Center for Human Imagination (@imagineUCSD) moderated. Featured students included Tyler Farnan, Courtney Geigle, Nathan Vieland, Jeanelle Horcasitas, Olivia Quintanilla and Jonathan Walton.

Neuroscience graduate student Alie Caldwell hosts the YouTube series Neuro Transmissions (@neuroyoutube). Along with other popular online scientists, she lends her expertise to Nerdist's science editor Kyle Hill as he asked what’s realistic and what’s not in Marvel's latest movie.

The League of Extraordinary Scientists and Engineers: More Science in Your Fiction

Nicholas Galitzki is a cosmologist / edge of the universe explorer working on the new Simons Observatory (@SimonsObs). Ben Frable is a marine biologist at Scripps Institution of Oceanography managing vast collections of sea life. Angela Zoumplis is an extremophile explorer, also at Scripps. They joined other scientists and engineers to talk about how science fiction pushes the boundaries of their fields.
